How to stop Overthinking in 3 minutes – By Dr. Saloni Singh

“Thinking is your natural power and Mind is your best asset” – the opening lines sum up this fantastic book by Dr. Saloni Singh. Concise and crisp, simple and practical is how I would best describe this short book.
Simply worded, with simple tools and steps which we can implement in our daily lives towards a calmer and happier being is what it emphasises. There is no short cut of course and the onus lies on us, using the power of our mind. When she says that you need to relax and be with your mind to see what happens – it sounds a bit unbelievable – yet when you try it – it works.
1. Overthinking explained
The book is divided into 9 short chapters including the introduction and is interspersed with interesting quotes. The titles of the chapters are self explanatory and can be read individually, not necessarily in a particular order. Sharing a slice of her personal life in one of the chapters, strikes a chord with the reader and makes her instantly likeable. The questions she has penned down are often meandering in our minds yet we are unable to organize our thoughts or rein them in – the result is “overthinking”. Interestingly she notes that overthinking is not the issue but the real issue is what you think when you are overthinking. She ably takes the reader on a journey towards peace and happiness, through a calm and clear mind, devoid of fears, anxieties and insecurities.
2. Tried and tested techniques
The tried and tested techniques of 1-1-1 and mindfulness shared by Saloni in her book are extremely easy to follow. No wonder it has had a profound effect on the mental health of innumerable people including those who would not consider themselves over- thinkers including me. “Junk in Junk out” – had me smiling to myself, and why? I am known for my decluttering skills and never gave a thought to decluttering my mind. It has always been about the physical spaces around us. Saloni’s words have had a profound effect and start ringing in my ears like a temple bell each time my head spins with the countless thoughts that start crossing it.
3. Summing it up
The moment you finish reading this book, it swings you into action mode, almost instantly. The quotes and affirmations – we seem to know all, yet we seldom or do not follow or put into practice. “A sharp mind is your best asset “ is how she sums up the book towards the end.
For me the main takeaways to stop overthinking from this amazing book are:
- Keep junk thoughts out
- Practice mindfulness not mindlessness
- Rein in the mind and use it as an asset
- The technique of 1-1-1
- Believe in yourself
A brilliant book which is not to be missed by anyone.
